FAQ for TeamO & PFD's

Can I wear a non-USCG approved Inflatable PFD in the United States?

From: U.S. Coast Guard Click Here for U.S. Coast Guard Website

According to U.S. Coast Guard regulations, all vessels must have a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved lifejacket or Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for each person on board. This requirement ensures safety and compliance with federal regulations.

While TeamO inflatable PFDs are ISO 12402-3 approved and meet international standards for safety and quality, they do not have USCG approval. Therefore, while you can wear TeamO PFDs to benefit from their advanced features like BackTow Technology, you must have USCG-approved lifejackets on board as well.

Why TeamO?
TeamO inflatable PFDs are designed to address serious marine safety concerns, particularly in the UK, and are now available in the USA. These PFDs offer unmatched quality, fit, and comfort, along with innovative BackTow Technology that enhances safety by towing you face-up if you fall overboard while tethered to a vessel.

Who should not use Inflatable PFDs?
According to the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC), inflatable PFDs are not recommended for:

  • Individuals under 16 years old
  • Individuals weighing less than 80 lbs (36.6 kg)
  • Use on personal watercraft
  • Whitewater paddling activities

How long does shipping take?
Shipping times for orders in the USA typically range from 2-10 business days, depending on the shipping option you select at checkout.

What is BackTow™ Technology?
Traditional inflatable PFDs may tow you face-down if you fall overboard while tethered to a vessel. TeamO’s BackTow™ technology is the only safety harness designed to tow you face-up in such situations. This feature provides a critical safety advantage, ensuring you remain in a safer position until help arrives.

The BackTow™ strap also doubles as a structural lifting point, making rescues easier and reducing the risk of injury during recovery. This innovative design offers maximum comfort with additional features such as a whistle, light, sprayhood, and double crotch straps.

Which Automatic Inflation System is Right for Your 170N Inflatable PFDs?
UML ProSensor Firing Head:
The UML ProSensor firing head, included as standard with TeamO inflatable PFDs, is our preferred inflation system. This water-activated system uses a compressed paper capsule that dissolves when wet, triggering the CO2 cylinder to inflate the PFD. The design ensures that water must travel upwards within the unit to dissolve the pellet, reducing the risk of accidental inflation from spray or rain.

Two color tabs on the unit indicate the activation status: green means the PFD is armed and ready, while red signals the need for a check. If the top tab is red, ensure the CO2 cylinder is unpunctured and securely screwed in. If the bottom tab is red, check that the paper pellet cup is firmly attached.

Hammar Firing Head:
The Hammar system activates through water pressure and requires immersion in water to release the spring that inflates the PFD. The cap must be submerged approximately 10cm underwater to generate sufficient pressure. This system is ideal for extreme sailing conditions, where the risk of accidental inflation from spray and rain is higher.

Do the Inflatable PFDs come with a warranty?
Yes, all TeamO inflatable PFDs come with a three-year manufacturer's warranty. If you’re unhappy with your purchase for any reason, please contact us at info@cruisingsolutions.com, and we’ll assist you as quickly as possible.

How long does the CO2 charge and light last?
The CO2 firing head typically lasts 3-4 years. We recommend annual servicing of your TeamO inflatable PFDs to ensure the canister remains at the correct weight. The light included with the PFD has a 5-year warranty and can last up to 8 hours of continuous use.

How do I re-arm my inflatable PFD after it has deployed?
We carry re-arming kits for all our inflatable PFDs. You can find a video tutorial on how to repack your TeamO inflatable PFD  click here.
